Rowdy crowd celebrations set off a mass brawl at a race track that left eight people injured. The yobs, aged between 17 and 29, kicked, punched and stamped on each other during a section of the Newmarket races. It was witnessed by thousands of people at the course on Thursday.
Inspector Alex Cheetham of Leicestershire Police said: “This was an extremely nasty incident involving a number of offenders and during these circumstances it was incredibly fortunate that nobody sustained any serious injury. “It was a regrettable and completely unacceptable response to a celebration that was meant to be positive and enjoyable.”
The charity Ofsted will investigate after an article raised concerns about waste dumping at Newmarket racecourse.
It is understood four people were sent to hospital and another eight people received medical attention, including those who lost teeth.
Newmarket is one of the most popular racecourses in the UK. Some 600,000 people, including royalty, are expected to see the fun-filled racing at the course over the course of the four-day meeting, which finishes on Saturday.
An Ofsted spokeswoman said: “We will now be looking into what action we need to take.”
