Have you always wanted to watch a police procedural set in what could very well be the future? Well, while the future is still a long way away, there are still some fantastic shows out there that take place in the meantime, as well as a few that take place in a dystopian version of the near future.
Take La Brea for example. A renewal for this show has been announced, with the season concluding this year. Set in Los Angeles circa 2030, the show chronicles the lives of the LAPD’s new police chief Connie Sachs (Chad Lowe) and his cadre of detectives as they investigate a series of crimes committed by hackers. To be sure, this is a far cry from the police procedurals we’re used to seeing, but if the show manages to survive without ratings erosion, we’ll all be happier for it.
The most-watched show in HBO’s history, Westworld, also takes place in the near future, though the show is not as sci-fi as La Brea. Written and created by Jonathan Nolan, the show focuses on robots that are put into operation at the behest of a corporation and ultimately banned from their very existence. In Westworld, humans are the main target of the robots, and the episode where the William-Madam Jeanne-Logan romance first begins is, at the very least, one of the all-time most realistic romantic romances.
We’ve rounded up some other sci-fi and dystopian shows which fall into either of these two categories — sci-fi shows that take place in the future or sci-fi shows that take place in the future — here, but if you haven’t checked them out yet, check them out now.
