Complete Results of Anthony Joshua vs. Oleksandr Usyk
Head to head, a commonality often felt in professional mixed martial arts. Joshua and Usyk are two of the world’s elite heavyweights, engaged in a fight of similar quality, with just a few minor differences on paper.
So far, it has been one on one as far as the headline draw was concerned, with Usyk and Joshua each getting their full share of attention to sit in the championship elite.
Saturday night, in a fight that everybody predicted would be the most exciting of the year, it was Usyk who was the one to come out on top.
After stopping Artur Beterbiev in less than a round, the undefeated Usyk was making his first start in his new Super Series and headed into what many had assumed to be a more easily solve affair.
Joshua, still in search of his fourth straight world title belt, gave fans what they expected to see, and staked his case as the best heavyweights on the planet.
Joshua dropped down to 175 lbs., under the directive of promoter Eddie Hearn, and back in the very place he took the WBA belt. Despite everyone’s assertion that Usyk wasn’t overmatched, he was taken by surprise by Joshua’s power, and he was finished in less than five rounds, absorbing punches that brought nausea to Joshua.
But while Joshua faced adversity with little to no respect, Usyk accepted the task, defeating Joshua via TKO at 2:56 of the fifth round.
Since being born in Kyrgyzstan, Usyk made his living as a kickboxer and wrestler before the match was made, and he was completely confident in his skills.
After his last time out, an easy win over Cheick Kongo, Usyk admitted that his last outing wasn’t the best. Usyk, however, didn’t seem to care or miss his performance, saying in the weeks leading up to the bout, “Everyone is saying that I didn’t get a very good result. Well, I have nothing to apologize about and I’ll be ready for anyone.”
A win that many predicted in the weeks leading up to the fight, Usyk also defeated another man in a similar fashion, and now his profile as a professional is higher than anyone who has been part of the Super Series.
